Thumb Sucking

Thumb Sucking

Thumb or finger sucking is a habit that babies may develop early on. It has a soothing effect and allows babies to contact and explore their surroundings. However, thumb-sucking should not go beyond the age of 3. If it does, you should seek a consultation with Dr. Peyton Harris at Harris Orthodontics because the habit can potentially develop bite problems.

Normal Bite & Thumb Sucking Problem

A normal bite involves the upper teeth growing to properly overlap the lower teeth. When your child sucks the thumb regularly, the pressure of the thumb resting on the gums can impact the normal tooth eruption process. It may also interfere with jaw growth. Children are highly likely to develop an open bite if the problem is not addressed in time.

How Can We Help with Thumb Sucking?

Dr. Harris has years of experience working with young children who have developed the thumb-sucking habit. We will conduct regular evaluations and monitor your child’s teeth to check whether the habit is affecting the alignment and health of their teeth. We will also encourage your child to stop the habit and provide additional resources to help break it.

When to Seek Treatment for Thumb Sucking?

The American Dental Association states that children should normally stop the habit on their own when they are 2 to 4 years old. Most children will grow out of this habit that no longer seems beneficial. Some children will continue thumb sucking. If your child continues to have the problem when their permanent teeth erupt, you should visit our office.

Kids that aggressively suck their thumb may suffer problems with the alignment and growth of their baby teeth. This can increase the risk of developing problems with the development of adult teeth. If you are unable to help your child overcome their thumb-sucking habit, Dr. Harris can help you while evaluating your child’s oral health.
